Subsurface Profiling Services
When you're the primary consulting firm developing a contamination remediation plan, you need an accurate, fast picture of subsurface conditions in the saturated and unsaturated zones. Cascade Drilling offers three technologies to cover all contingencies you may face during assessment of a site.
Hydraulic Profiling Tool (HPT)
The Hydraulic Profiling Tool (HPT) allows the user to create fast, continuous, real-time profiles of soil hydraulic properties in both fine- and coarse-grained material. The HPT uses a sensitive downhole transducer to measure the pressure response of the soil to injection of water.
The HPT has many field applications. One primary use of this new tool is to locate and define preferential migration pathways for contaminants in the subsurface. It can also be used to target zones for injection of remediation material.
In addition, the HPT can be used to select well screen intervals, evaluate locations to conduct slug tests, and measure static water conditions across a site.

Membrane Interface Probe (MIP) Real-Time Profiling
The Membrane Interface Probe (MIP) is the only commercially available tool capable of logging both chlorinated and non-chlorinated volatile contaminants
in soil.
The MIP shows:
- Where the contaminant is encountered at depth.
- Where the contaminant is absent at depth.
- How the concentration of contaminants at this location compares to the concentration at other locations.
- Where the contaminant occurs in relation to lithology.
Features of the MIP System:
- Detects volatile compounds in the gaseous, absorbed, dissolved, or free phases.
- Applicable to both chlorinated and non-chlorinated species.
- Operates in both saturated and unsaturated materials.
- Provides continuous log of soil electrical conductivity.
- Is built to withstand percussion driving.
One or more detectors, a Flame Ionization Detector (FID), Halogen Specific Detector (XSD), or Photoionization Detector (PID), measures the total VOCs in the carrier gas and immediately registers this information for you on instruments.
MIP provides qualitative data that can be correlated to actual lab analysis for VOCs in the soil or groundwater. MIP also concurrently measures soil conductivity, data which can be plotted as a function of subsurface depth. This provides a representative plot of contamination levels and changes in soil permeability.
This data can be downloaded in the field into software that creates a two- or three-dimensional interpretation of soil conductivity versus VOC detector response as a function of depth. The result is an accurate contaminant-mass-reduction estimate based on a clear picture of the subsurface mass. This means less time in the field, and less cost for you on a clear picture of the subsurface mass.

Electrical Conductivity (EC)

By integrating a Wenner array into the HPT, we can log electrical conductivity at the same time as we measure hydraulic conductivity. This provides you with the lithic composition underlying your site, as well as the location of permeable and non-permeable areas.
